a, o or u.

 Words ending with silent e usually retain the e before a suffix beginning with a consonant.

Words ending in ie change the is to y before adding ing:

 Words ending in y preceded by a consonant change the y to i before any suffix except one beginning with i.

Words ending in ant, ance, ent, ence follow no clear-cut pattern. Therefore, consult a dictionary when a doubt.
