ESL Lab Recommendations for ESL 302, 106 and 91

The purpose of the ESL Multimedia Lab is to facilitate language learning and skill acquisition at all levels of the ESL curriculum. The purpose of the online lab is to further the same and to encourage active study/practice habits outside the college environment. ESL instructors will be present in the Lab (L-120) to facilitate and guide these learning endeavors through individual and group instruction and guidance with oral and written work.

Please recommend the following programs to your ESL 302 and 91 students:

  • Focus on Grammar High-Intermediate and Advanced (Icon on desktop)
  • Writer’s Resources (Icon on Desktop) – This is a complete course on all of the elements of writing with clear examples of many types of well-written paragraphs and essays.  Sentence and grammatical elements are included as well. You may want to preview this in the Lab so that you can recommend sections of it to your students as needed.
  • The Longman Advanced Dictionary

The link below provides a goldmine of well-written essays that clearly demonstrate the parts and organization of an essay. Click Paragraphs to read the essays and then check out the margin notes, proofreading, and In-Brief (graphic organizer) links.  Don’t miss this great site. It’s listed under Reading , and the site’s essay link can be found under the Writing section for Online Links for 100L.

The next link allows you to insert a written passage for analysis of its vocabulary, breaking the words down into four frequency levels. It will highlight academic words students need for successful reading across the disciplines. It may also be useful in analyzing articles for possible prompts – at least with regard to vocabulary difficulty – but not for cultural ambiguity.

Please encourage your students who are having difficulty to come to the lab in a group for help. If you can encourage a group to come at a specific time, please email Kathleen.hanson@sjcc.edu and I will try to schedule either a lab workshop or a session with a lab instructor on duty at that time or the Instructional Assistant. Include in your email the issue you want covered with your students. Here is the schedule for Lab instructors.

For Lab workshop information you can check the following link on a monthly basis. Our workshop topics will be posted under the schedule for the given month.  Please recommend the workshops to your students. If you would like to recommend a workshop topic at a time when your students can come, please check the instructors’ schedule to see if it’s feasible and email the instructor on duty at that time to see if it can be arranged. Workshops will begin after the second week of the semester and will be posted by the end of the second week. Encourage your students, including those online, to bring their assignments for questions, comments, and guided instruction for revision and editing.

You will receive a packet of information for students. Please go over this material with them and tell them they will be welcome to use the ESL Lab after the first week of the semester. Meanwhile, they can use www.eslstation.net. No formal orientation is scheduled for your students since most will be familiar with the lab. Thank you very much for helping inform your students of the wealth of learning opportunities available to them.

For ESL Lab hours, please click here and please let us know how we can help you facilitate the learning objectives of your course during this semester.
