Beilstein Abstracts Database.
An electronic database of publications about organic compounds, providing bibliographic citations and descriptive abstracts (no full-text articles). Access to the site is free but registration is required. The print version of this work is Beilstein's Handbook for Organic Chemistry, 25 vols. (New York: Springer-Verlag New York 1918-40, with periodic updates). For information about inorganic compounds, see Gmelin's Handbuch der Anorganischen Chemie (Berlin: Springer, 1921).

Chemical Abstracts Service. Columbus, Ohio: American Chemical Society, 1967-.
A comprehensive electronic index to chemistry, providing bibliographic citations and descriptive abstracts to publications. The index is searchable by publication title, subject, chemical structure, formula, and more. The print version of this work is titled Chemical Abstracts and provides coverage beginning in 1907.

CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics, Online. Ed. David R. Lide. Boca Raton: CRC Press, 1999-.
A compilation of formulas, numeric data, tables, lists, and charts of interest to scientists. The electronic database, searchable by keyword and subject, provides the full texts of these materials. The print version of this work, the CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics, provides coverage beginning in 1913; it is updated annually.

e-Eros. Ed. Lewo A. Pacquette. 8 vols. New York: Wiley, 1995.
An electronic full-text database of over 48,000 reactions and 3,500 of the most frequently consulted reagents. Search options include keywords, reagent name, and author. The print version of this work is the Encyclopedia of Reagents for Organic Synthesis. When using the print version, consult volume 8 for a subject index, a formula index, a reagent structural class index, and a reagent function index.

Kirk-Othmer Encyclopedia of Chemical Technology, Electronic Version. New York: Wiley, 1991-.
An online encyclopedia (in some libraries part of the Wiley InterScience databases) providing in-depth articles on chemical properties, manufacturing, and technology, and organized alphabetically by subject, with an advanced search option. (Users can sign in as a guest at http://jws-edck.interscience.wiley.com:8095 to obtain abstracts of articles; however, to obtain full texts, the library must subscribe to Wiley.) The print version of this work is titled Kirk-Othmer Encyclopedia of Chemical Technology, 4th ed., 25 vols. (New York: Wiley, 1991-).

Databases and Indexes | Web Resources | Reference Books BioChemLinks.com.
A portal to excellent resources in biology, biochemistry, and chemistry, with links to full-text science news sources. The links are organized by subject—general chemistry, organic chemistry, biochemistry, biotechnology, and the teaching of science—and geared toward science education and the nonspecialist. The site is the product of Schmidel & Wojcik, editorial Web developers of a number of science sites. Dyann Schmidel has also taught graduate and undergraduate courses in chemistry, biochemistry, and biotechnology.
