Scoring Guide: Range of Scores
SUPERIOR:
The "6" essay will demonstrate superior competence in writing
on both rhetorical and syntactic levels.
A "6" paper will:
" Show a clear command
of language;
" Demonstrate a clear sense of essay form, paragraphing and
coherence;
" Support a thesis with specific and convincing evidence that goes
beyond the personal narrative;
" Intelligently addresses the topic, showing originality of thought
and expression;
" Demonstrate a high level of syntactic variety and appropriate
word choice;
" Be nearly free of error.
ABOVE AVERAGE:
The "5" essay will demonstrate clear competence in writing on
both rhetorical and syntactic levels.
A "5" paper will:
" Demonstrate a sense
of essay form, paragraphing and coherence;
" Be generally well organized and well-developed, although it
offers fewer details than a "6" paper;
" Offer explanations or illustrations of key ideas;
" Show unity, coherence and progression;
" Demonstrate syntactic variety and range of vocabulary;
" Display facility in language with occasional errors that would be
corrected upon revision.
AVERAGE:
The
"4" essay will demonstrate competence in writing on both
rhetorical and syntactic levels.
A "4" paper will:
" Provide adequate
organization and development with some appropriate examples;
" Demonstrate a basic knowledge of sentence structure;
" Address the topic adequately, although perhaps not completely;
" Use some details to support a thesis or illustrate ideas;
" Demonstrate adequate, but not distinguished, facility with
language and syntax;
" May contain some errors that impair meaning.
APPROACHING COMPETENCE:
A
"3" essay, while it may demonstrate developing competence in
writing, remains flawed on either the rhetorical or syntactic level or
both.
A "3" essay will:
" Respond to the topic, but in generalizations, not providing
adequate or appropriate detail and specificity, neglecting part of the
writing task;
" Be underdeveloped or disorganized;
" Display a pattern or accumulation of errors that obscure meaning;
" Display limited or inappropriate word choice.
LIMITED COMPETENCE:
A "2" essay suggests limited competence in writing.
A "2" essay will:
" Lack coherence or adequate development;
" Offer little detail or relevant specifics;
" Contain serious and frequent errors in usage and sentence
structure;
" Display problems with fluency and focus.
NOT APPROACHING
OBJECTIVES:
A "1" essay does not achieve limited
competence in writing.
A "1" essay will:
" Reveal the writer's lack of comprehension of the question;
" Be badly marred by serious and persistent writing errors;
" Possibly be unfocused, illogical, incoherent or seriously
underdeveloped.
