EDTECH 03  Tools for Online Teaching 
                                                        3 units lecture - Online  
Introduction:
As part of a four-course training program, Tools for Online Teaching is essential to assist participants in exploring the special requirements of online curriculum development and provides tools and processes for meeting these requirements.
 
Catalogue Description:
 
This course, EDTECH 03, is designed to assist learners in adapting, transforming, and/or creating new curricula for online delivery using available technology. The course includes identifying available tools and exploring the technical environment that would best deliver a course online.  The focus is on determining what tools work best and how they can be used to the benefit of the teacher and students.
 
Short Description: This course explores the available tools for effective online delivery.
 
Prerequisite:  Introduction to Online Teaching
 
Course Objectives:
 
At the end of the course, the student will be able to:
  • Demonstrate an awareness of current topics in online teaching
  • Find the right mix of technology
  • Understand that there is no one-size-fits all in online teaching
  • Understand the pitfalls in online environments
  • Recognize and identify the strength and weakness of various modes of asynchronous and synchronous communication by visiting and critiquing academic online courses
  • Experiment with real-life online situations and appraise various online technologies for potential use 
  • Investigate and evaluate successful online programs
  • Explore how to facilitate online discussion
  • Examine what systems will work best for course requirements
  • Examine the technical environment that will best deliver a course online
  • Determine what options for communication best suit the course environment
  • Use internet recourses to supplement an online curriculum 
Description of Course Content:

This course is offered in 8 weeks.  You will be able to access lectures, complete assignments, and interact with me and other class members via your computer.

Class activities include

Reading lectures and supplementary materials, participating in online discussions, submitting papers on assigned problems and analyzing submitted papers from other class members.

Folders

We will use a number of folders to organize the course: EDTEC02 WEEK 1, ETECH02 WEEK 2 etc.. All work for the week will be done within the designated weekly folder.
 
n each folder, I will present detailed information on the week's assignment and lecture material; you will use the folder to di scuss the assignment, do class activities, ask questions, submit projects, and do peer review. 
 
There will be other folders: EDTECH02 CYBER-CAFE for chatting and general comments outside the classroom. EDTECH02 BIOGRAPHIES where each of us will submit a biography.

  • Evaluate and compare two online courses
  • evaluate and compare two software packages
  • Completing one final project
  • Reviewing the final project of two classmates

Evaluation:
 
Your grades will be based on the individual assignments, class participation and the final project.   Grades will be based on the following point system:
Class participation and discussion 
  10 points are granted for regular posting in
   discussion forum at least twice a week and
   up to 15 points are granted for participation
   that enhances, stimulates, or contributes to the course. 
25 Points
Join in a chat discussion   10 Points
Evaluate and compare two online courses      20 Points
Evaluate and compare two software         10 Points
Final Project 25 Points
Evaluate two classmates Final Project 10 Points
